Listed below are the workers who are entitled to receive the minimum wage.
Apprentices
Apprentices who have completed the first year of their apprenticeship and are aged 19 and above are entitled to receive the minimum wage.
Piece workers
Regardless of the number of items you produce or tasks you do you must either be paid at least the national minimum wage for each hour you work or the‘fair’piece rate for each item produced or task performed.
Agency Workers
An agency worker is entitled to receive the minimum wage. If the agency pays you your salary directly they are responsible to pay the correct rate.
Working Abroad
If you are a UK worker and your employer sends you abroad to work, you are still entitled to receive the UK national minimum wage.
Commission Worker
Workers paid commission ( on sales etc) for the whole or part of their salary must receive at least the UK national minimum wage.
Homeworker
A home worker is entitled to the minimum wage. Self-employed people running a business from home are not entitled.
Disabled Workers
Disabled workers are entitled to receive the minimum wage regardless of their disability.
Working away at Sea
If you live in the UK and work on a UK-registered ship anywhere in the world, you must be paid at least the UK minimum wage.
Offshore workers
If you work in UK territorial waters on an oil rig you are entitled to the minimum wage.
Training and workers on probation
When on a probation period or training for a job you must still receive at least the minimum wage. Some apprentices will not receive the UK minimum wage if under 19 years of age or 19 and in their first year of apprenticeship.
Agricultural Worker
An agricultural worker can not be paid less than the minimum wage and some workers may receive a higher payment through the Agricultural Minimum Wage rate.
Foreign workers
Workers from outside the UK and legally working in the UK must be paid at least the national minimum wage. Regardless if the employer is based in the UK or abroad.
