Minimum Wage

The Minimum Wage is a minimum amount per hour that most workers in the UK are entitled to be paid. Minimum UK Wage rates.

The National Minimum Wage Act

The National Minimum Wage Act was introduced in 1998 by the labour government. Before the act was introduced workers or their union had to negotiate the hourly wage. Labour realised many low paid workers felt uncomfortable or unable to ask for a wage increase, and with union membership dwindling the government decided a national minimum wage was needed.

Who is entitled to the minimum wage?

Most UK workers beyond compulsory school leaving age are entitled to receive the UK minimum wage. Worker entitled to The Minimum Wage.

Not receiving the national minimum wage?

If your employer is paying you less than UK minimum wage they may be breaking the law. Before you make a complaint talk to your employer first to see if you can resolve the issue.

If your employer refuses to pay the UK minimum wage, you need to contact HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to make a complaint. HMRC are responsible for enforcing the national minimum wage.
